Groundwater in focus on World Water Day
The theme of World Water Day 2022 is groundwater. At Orbital, we work with smart water savings every day, but World Water Day is an extra important day for us, as the world draws attention to the importance of water.
Groundwater is the source of drinking water for half of the world's population. It is an indispensable and invisible source of life - threatened by pollution, waste and conflict. All around our planet, water scarcity affects people's daily lives, yet we regard water as an elusive resource that we take for granted. Maybe because it's not visible until it's too late? This must change quickly, and the change must take place in your and my everyday life.
Many people think that water shortages do not affect them. It's time to rethink. A year ago today, scientists warned that widespread droughts will soon become commonplace in Europe. It will have a serious impact on the possibilities of finding fresh groundwater – not only for drinking but also for irrigation and food production.
In southern Sweden, we are used to water restrictions every summer, and on Gotland it is part of everyday life all year round. It's a situation we need to solve here and now, and we at Orbital want to be part of that solution. Half of the water in your home is used in the bathroom, so why not start there? For example, as in the Vidhave project on Gotland, where circular technology from Orbital saves water and energy.
- You don't have to sacrifice your comfort for sustainability - you just need a smarter solution. Every shift starts with one person, and this change starts in your bathroom. It's time to stop taking our water for granted, says Mehrdad Mahdjoubi, CEO and founder of Orbital Systems.
